Reading of books or papers on forest science in foreign languages poses special problems for those who need to understand and be familiar with the particular jargon of this discipline and associated sciences. This Glossary was compiled as an aid for reading and writing in five languages.

This book provides over 1800 main entries, that is, over 1800 Spanish definitions of forestry-related terms, and their equivalencies in English, Japanese, French and Brazilian Portuguese. Together with secondary entries, the book totals about 3000 terms (in Spanish). Illustrations are provided for several tools and entries. Six alphabetical indexes are provided for each language, as well as comprehensive cross-references, usage remarks including grammar notes, country of region where the term is used; alternate terms, synonym-antonym annotations, explanation of terms used in colloquial language by loggers, etc.

Finally, although this lexicon revolves around forestry terminology sensu stricto, it also includes terms from related sciences such as wildlife management, wood science, soil science, to name only a few.

母国語がスペイン語の林学生にとって、自国語の訳がついた使い易い西和専門辞書がほとんどないのが現状です。従って、多くの林学生は英語で編集された「英和専門辞書」や「仏和専門辞書」を代用している場合が多いようです。これらの辞書は英語やフランス語などがよくできない林学生にとって非常に使いにくいといわれています。
英語以外の言葉を母国語とする林学生にとって使いやすい用語集の存在する必要があると考え、本「四か国語森林学用語集」の編集を進めておりました。
• この用語集は、森林学を学習する人が、数国語の文献を参考することを目的として編集されました。
• 見出し語として、１８００以上を収録しました。見出し語は林学の雑誌、辞書、インターネットなどを参考にして、林学に関係する方々の合議によって決めました。
• 本用語集を書きはじめたとき、母国語がスペイン語や日本語の人のために撰修されましたが、のちほどフランス語や英語やポルトガル語を含むように構成しまた。
